Abbot Point expansion is Bulk Handling Facility of the Year
February 16, 2010
The Abbot Point Coal Terminal X25 Expansion, an Aurecon Hatch project, was recently named the 2009 Bulk Handling Facility of the Year (Resources and Infrastructure category) at the Australian Bulk Handling Awards.
Aurecon Hatch, John Holland and North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation were recognized for delivering this year’s most outstanding bulk-handling facility servicing the resources sector – including mines, grains, commodities, ports and terminals.
The expansion involved increasing the terminal capacity from 21 Mtpa to 25 Mtpa. Work included construction of a second rail dump station and inloading stream with a capacity of 6,000 tph, together with upgrading of the outloading stream from 4,000 tph to 6,000 tph.
All of the work took place in a ‘brownfield’ environment with minimal disruption to the existing operation. The project was delivered safely and on schedule.
The next Abbot Point expansion will be to 50 mtpa. Construction is well-advanced, and the expansion is scheduled for completion in mid-2010.
