Hatch and QIT win Project of the Year Award
April 21, 2008
Hatch and QIT-Fer et Titane received the 2008 Project of the Year Award for the “UGS Expansion to 375 ktpa” project. By winning the award, the project team becomes a semi-finalist for the PMI International Project of the Year award.
Hatch was responsible for engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM), process equipment design (reactor, drier, and classifier), controls programming, and commissioning for expansion of the ALP (acid lixiviation process) and SPP (scoria preparation process) sectors of the QIT-Fer et Titane UGS plant in Sorel-Tracy, Québec.
This expansion raised UGS plant production capacity to more than 375,000 tons per year (tpa), a 15% increase in capacity.
The integrated Hatch-QIT team not only completed the project three months ahead of schedule, but also with savings of $15 million and with no compensatable accidents. There were no lost-time injuries during the 525 000 hours worked. The project eclipsed all speed records for production start-up. Indeed, only two days were needed for total production start-up of the ALP sector and one week for the SPP sector, something that was never done before.
The “UGS Expansion to 375 ktpa” project also received the Hatch Group 2007 Roy Curtis Project Excellence Award.
