Drought conditions spur desalination plant developmentAdelaide is a metropolitan area with 1.1 million residents and hundreds of industrial companies, commercial offices and stores. Most of the city’s potable water supply is pumped from the Murray River, but low rainfall in southeastern Australia has reduced the volume of water entering the Murray-Darling Basin. As a result, the Government of South Australia has determined that a new source of water is needed to augment the existing supply. The project will deliver up to 100 billion litres of water each year – about half of Adelaide’s current water supply. Hatch is a member of the Hatch/SMEC Joint Venture.
